I don't know how you got his birthplace as PA because all census records and his WWII draft card all say New Jersey.

John, his wife Harriet, son Harold and father-in-law are in Newark in the 1920 and 1930 census. In the 1940 census, Harold has left the household and apparently William MCLARTY had died.

On John's WWII draft card he said he was born 17 Mar 1882 in New Jersey, that he was retired and lived in Monmouth, NJ.

It appears he did not die in the line of duty but retired from the Newark Police Department. See http://www.odmp.org/info/genealogy-resources who may have more information.
