Your current address suggests a descent from the Maine branch of the Record family as opposed to the Rhode Island branch. A search of the Record Family Forum on 21 October 2006 returns 44 postings in response to the search term, "Maine".

A search of http://www.familysearch.org provides no likely candidates in response to the search term "Robert Record".

The key problem in most twenty-first century genealogy searches is determining the great grandfather. Among families of apparent British origin, pedigrees are usually publicly available for the early nineteenth century and earlier.

One tactic is to find an early nineteenth century man with the surname Record or Rickard near the birthplace of your known grandfather. (You can do this by examining the posts retrieved by using the search term "Maine" or "New Hampshire".) Examination of the wills or letters of administration filed in the Probate Court of the county of death of that nineteenth century individual may definitively reveal his children and grandchildren, which might possibly include your grandfather.

"Record" is not as common a name as "Smith". Consequently, the search is less difficult for a Record than a Smith.
