Rumor - John Reay (Scots) married Lady Mary Sutherland

The current family story I have is that John Reay, a Scots, married Lady Mary Sutherland and had a son John Reay who married Lady Mary Milburn.

Does anyone know why/how a women is called "Lady" in England? Being American, I have no knowledge and can't seem to find any easy explanation.
