Birth: 1742

There is some confusion about the birth years of Peter and his siblings. One source sites Peter's birth year as being 1742 or 1743.Also, one source gives 1810 as a possible death date.
*The Old Reasoner Burying Ground is "located on a little knoll overlooking Crooked Creek", presumably in Cambridge, Ohio. The headstones of Peter and Mary Mollie Reasoner no longer exist, but the monument erected in 1930 in honour of the Soldiers of the Revolution who are buried in Guernsey County (bearing the name of Peter Reasoner) still stands.

"Sarah Reasoner Hill maintained that her brother, Jacob, was part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.Reasearch shows no Jacob Reasoner/Reznor, but there are other records in history naming him and 2 cronies as guides with the early trapping parties of Manuel Lisa, John Jacob Astor, Wilson Price Hunt, and Andrew Henry."

Reli: elder in Presbyterian church
Benjamin lived in Rostraver Township when the 1790 census was taken. He served in the Pennsylvania militia. After his move to Ohio, Benjamin enlisted in the War of 1812.During his Indian fighting, a rifle bullet struck a spoon that he was carrying in his pocket and injured him in such a manner as to leave him lame for life.He went to Ohio in 1805 and settled in Zanesville. He was elected Squire and held the position for several years. He was an elder in the Presbyterian church.Presbyterians did not work on Sunday, no food was prepared on Sunday, and the children were not allowed to make noise. The land in Ohio was not very good and the hereditary urge westward began to gnaw at him.He and his family then settled in Licking Township, Blackford County, Indiana, in 1831.Early life in Indiana was rendered more difficult because of the presence of malaria. It required quite a bit of tenacity of pupose to remain there under such conditions and quite a few did not remain.Benjamin was 61 and Mary 56 at the time of the move to Indiana and it speaks well for their strength of character and resolution that they persisted under such unfavorable conditions and succeeded as well."

"On July 4th, 1803, John Reasoner, coming from Pennsylvania with his family, established a home on Zane's Trace, a short distance east of the present site of New Concord. He was the fifth family to settle between Cambridge and Zanesville. When John Reasoner came here there were only six women living in what is now Guernsey County. He had married the Widow Thompson who was formerly Elizabeth Wilson.Robert Thompson, who was present at the service of her son [sic].
"Within the year following the arrival of John Reasoner, he had two or three families as neighbors.Nothing is known about the Reverend Arbuthnot other than he conducted the first service.Travelling through to Zane's Trace he may have been invited to stay over Sunday to preach to the settlers.Harry Reasoner, a great grandson of John Reasoner, who is now living near the home of his pioneer ancestor, has a record of the meeting beneath the beech tree.According to it the persons named here "communed".Before coming here John Reasoner was active in the work of the Presbyterian Church and he so continued thoughout his life."
"John Reasoner's is said to have been the fifth family to establish itself on the Zane Trace between Cambridge and Zanesville. It is stated by Reasoner descendants who have the records that the first Presbyterian service in the county was conducted by a Rev. Arbuthnot, an itinerant preacher, under a beech tree at the Reasoner home on 4 July 1803.In the following year, Muskingum County was erected from Washington County.Hanry Reasoner, the fourth son of Peter, owned the land where the town of New Concord now stands."
"He was an Elder and one of the original members of the Pleasant Hill Presybterian Church and a devout Christian."
"He was six feet tall, slender and erect, with a dark complexion, black hair, and dark eyes.He was a studious man with a mild disposition and good judgement."
"He was the first of the Reasoner clan to go west into Ohio.He entered the state at Steubenville and followed the old Steuben or Zane's Trace, which is now the Ohio portion of the William Penn Highway, to Cambridge, then on to the place he located in Westland Township, Guernsey County, just below where New Concord stands."

Ray Reasoner was a mysterious character. He left his wife and daughter and became a rover. He was the informant on his son George's death certificate, which means he was still with the family in 1918.They were then living in Muskingum County on RFD #1 (Zanesville, Ohio).Son George died in a house fire on River Road along Jonathan Creek. It is possible that the death of George and the loss of their home in the fire caused the split-up between Ray and Florence.
Ray was reported dead several times, but such reports were false. He would reappear for a day, then disappear again for years. Finally it was said that he'd died "out west somewhere", having been struck on a sidewalk by a runaway truck.Although the dates differ slightly from the ones given by my grandmother, Gladys Belle Reasoner, the Arizona death certificate for Ray B. Reasoner most certainly has to be his.The social security card application must also be his, as the social security numbers are the same and the signature matches the one on George's death certificate.
Although Ray wasn't present in his daughter's life, i believe he kept an eye on her.One time he showed up at her school to check up on her, then vanished.Years later Gladys spotted him on the street in Zanesville. They talked and exchanged addresses. The next day, he was gone. That was the last Gladys ever saw of her father.

There is some confusion about the birth years of Garrett and his siblings. One source sites Garrett's birth year as being ca. 1747.
Served in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War.
"Journal of the House of Burgesses of Virginia, 1761, 1765--there is record of Garrett as a witness at a Court of Inquiry where Mr. Thomas Rutherford, a member of the House of Burgesses from Hampshire County, had preferred charges against a Col. Stephens, head of the militia of Virginia, claiming that Stephens had failed to give proper assistance to a Col. Boquet.Boquet, a French soldier of fortune, said he could put a stop to the Indian trouble in Hampshire County if given the necessary assistance.Col. Stephens was acquitted by the Court, although many doubts remained unsatisfied.Garrett and his neighbors (three of the Kuykendall men) were among the witnesses. For traveling fifty miles and testifying, Garrett received a payment of 225 pounds of tobacco. At that time, themonetary system was based upon tobacco instead of gold.It was merely credit, not actually 225 pounds of tobacco."
