Hello there,

I was born in England and am now living in London. I'm also interested in the name Reaney as it seems to be quite a rare name.
My father, Desmond Reaney had Irish parents:Francis Reaney from West Meath and Helena Murphy from Kerry.
I think it is an Irish name and somewhere on the web it has been suggested that it derives from the Gaelic name, O'Riaghne.

Having said that, there is region in England where there is a disproportionate amount of Reaneys. If you ever go to Sheffield have a look in the telephone directory: there's a whole page of Reaneys!! My father once told me that near Sheffield there was an ancient stone called the Raynay stone and that is where the name derives. I think it may be because there was a massive wave of Irish immigration to Sheffield at the beginning of the 1900s.
Anyway I hope you find this trivial info interesting.

Best wishes,

Daniel Reaney
