Regarding one Calvin Joshua Reams, Pvt Co D, 5th Fl Inf, I thought you all might be interested in the following.Calvin Joshua was wounded at Sharpsburg, Va in Nov of 1862, sent to the field hospital and then was recuperating in Richmond during new years. He did die of pneumonia, but most soldiers who were wounded did and pneumonia was a complication which set in after the wounding. On Jan 1, 1863 he and all other wounded soldiers of the Confederacy, who were in Richmond, was on the front lawn of the Richmond White House, when our beloved President, Mr Davis, delivered his marvelous speech to them on that day.You can read it in Shelby Foote's account the Civil War.In addition, when he died he was in possession of 2 dollars and an old pocket comb. There was an article written about him in the Sons of Confederate Veterans Magazine, written in the mid-late 80's by a good friend of mine, the then chaplain of the confederacy, Dr. Ray C. Curtis.
I might add that his flag, that of the 5th Fl is in the State Capitol today, and is the only flag brought home from that war.The 5th also went to war in uniforms made by the saintly ladies of Jefferson County, for their "Tigers".
Dr. Reams,
son of Lester
son of Virgie
Grandson of Drummer
PS I have photos of Drummer and his brothers. along with all the Stanland boys
This site is where it all started with the Reams' in America with Johann Eberhard Reams in Lancaster Co PA
