I am researching the Andrew Rea family of S.C.
Matthew Ray, born Jan. 15, 1788 in S.C., died May 11, 1845 in Conecuh Co., AL. is believed to be a son of Andrew Rea.Matthew is my gg grandfather.
Andrew Rea, Sr. probably arrived from Ireland about February of 1768 since he petitioned forland in S.C.under the Bounty Act of 1761 on February 23, 1768. The Bounty Act broadened earlier immigration laws for the special benefit of religious refugees.Applicants had to have certificates showing that they were protestants and entitled to receive the benefits allowed under the act. His family is:
Andrew Rea, 38
Patrick Rea, 16
Archibald Rea, 14
Margaret Rea, 12
Andrew, 9
John, 6
Elizabeth, 4
Andrew applied for and received 350 acres of land on the Broad River of S.C.His son, Patrick, applied for 100 acres.
In the 1790 First Federal Census of Old Ninety-Six District, Spartanburg, S.C.

On November 9, 1810, a passport to travel through the Creek Indian Nation was granted by the governor of Georgia to Matthew Ray and James Rushton, both of Edgefield Dist., S.C.
In Edgefield, S.C. marriages 1769-1880 implied in probate records:
Mathew Ray married (?) Hagood around 1813.
The family has thought he married Holly M. May about 1812.
