Dear Maurice,I am not an expert on Irish genealogy but will give you what information I can. Lough Rea is the english version of Loch Riach in Co galway, which I think means grey or dappled lake. it's quite possible the family took it's name from the lake but must admit I have never heard the story. I do not think it's now possible to verify this but if anyone knows differently then by all means reply and let us know. As for Irish records you are probably aware that census records from 1821-51 were destroyed in a fire and the records from 1861 -91 were destroyed earlier on the order of the goverment, this makes it much harder to trace your family. The Irish passenger list below may be useful, there are Rays which emigrated to North and South Carolina from Ireland listed there. www.genealogybranches.com/irishpassengerlists The public record office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) www.irishtimes.com is also useful because it tells you about alternative records which are available and where to find them. Are you sure that your Rays came from Galway if so the East Galway family History Society may be able to help or the Galway FHS West. If I can be of further help please let me know and god luck with your search. Regards June Notify Administrator about this message?
