Edward Rea & Elizabeth (b ca 1775) VA --> OH --> IL
Seeking information on family of Edward Rea (b bef 1775 Scotland) and wife Elizabeth (b 1775 VA). Per son’s obituary they had 12 children. Named were sons: John, William, James, Samuel and George (only one living when Samuel died March 1879). The only daughter named was Mary Alsbury. I know she was still living at that time. Though she was not named, I am pretty sure that another daughter was Elizabeth Ingram (deceased). My tentative conclusion is that since both living and deceased sons names were given, and Elizabeth and other “speculated” daughters were deceased… that the other “unknowns” were probably also deceased daughters. I DO NOT know that to be true, though. Here is what I’ve pieced together on the family.
Edward Rea, b bef 1775 Scotland, d ca early 1830 Gallipolis, OH. He married Elizabeth ___ ca 1795 in probably VA. She was born 20 Dec 1775 VA and died 17 Jan 1856 in Decatur, Macon Co., IL. Their children included (7 known, 3 probable):
----- John, ca 1796 VA. He died after March 1879 (prob after the 1880 census) in Macon Co., IL. John was evidently the oldest child (certainly the oldest son). He never married and is buried in Cross Cemetery, Macon Co., IL.
----- William, b ca 1796. William died 1853 in California; he was a twin to John.
----- James, b ca 1798 VA. James married Hannah ?Hutsonpiller 1818 in Gallia Co., OH. She was born ca 1799 VA and was probably the daughter of Abraham Hutsinpiller (living next to James on 1820 Gallia Co., OH census). Their children: Melinda, Samuel, Rebecca, Nancy, Margaret M (there were older children, but do not have the names). James Died Feb 1879 in California.
----- Samuel, b 1801 Kanawha Co., VA (now WV). He married Catherine Dennis 1856 in Macon Co., IL. She survived Samuel who died 20 Mar 1879 in Decatur, IL. No children were listed in his obituary.
----- Mary, b 1802 VA. She married Charles Alsbury ca 1819. Mary died 1894 in Macon Co., IL and is buried with Charles in Cross Cemetery, Macon Co., IL. Their children: John (m West), Elizabeth (m Buchanan), Edward Rea (m1-Rhea, m2-Heath), Mary M., Nancy Ann (m Wells), Charles (m Mary unk surname), William (m Murdock), Susanna, Brice, Harriett (m Chittum), and James.
----- George, b ??, died enroute to California ca 1853
----- Elizabeth, b 1811. She married Kinian Ingram 31 Oct 1833 Macon Co., IL. He died 1835 and she died May 1850. Two daughters, Adaline and Nancy E, residing with her brother, Samuel in 1850 (and possibly in 1840, but where was Elizabeth?)
Other, PROBABLE children:
----- Nancy Rea who married Caleb Warfield in 1835 (first marriage in Oakley Twp)
----- Margaret Rea, b ca 1813. She married Guy Helm in 1847. She may have died in June 1886 as The Daily Review (a Decatur, IL paper) published an obituary for Mrs. Guy Help 17 June 1886. I’ve not seen the obit, so am not sure. However, Guy Helm and family also migrated from Gallia Co., OH in 1830 and settled in Oakley Twp
----- Susannah Rea who married Laurence Helm in 1836 Macon County.
I believe there was a connection between this family and the Alsbury and/or Tucker family BEFORE the marriage of Charles Alsbury and Mary Rea and am eager to exchange additional info with others researching this line. You can reply via post or by e-mail. Thanks, Jennifer [email protected]
