Major James Raynor was the oldest son of Harriet Daniel "Hattie" Colvin and Kenneth Fletcher Raynor. He was born December 18, 1880, and grew up in the land of "tar heels"--Cumberland County, North Carolina. On March 3, 1899, he obtained a license to marry Mary Nettie Davis, the 24 year old daughter of John Edward Davis. Their marriage was consecrated on April 9, 1899, with John Smith, Justice of the Peace presiding. Witnesses were M. A. Mason, John D. Davis, and C. D. Davis. The latter two were Mary Nettie's brothers. By 1910, they had six children, Lester James, Lula Mae, Lee Etta, Lossie Eva, Luther Kenneth, and Lucile. On the 1910 Census, Major James Raynor described his occupation as "farmer." Major James Raynor moved his family to Alabama. He had to register for the World War I draft, and did so on September 12, 1918. At the time, he was living in Brewton, Escambia County, Alabama. He noted on the draft registration form that he was a carpenter by trade. He was described as being of medium build and height and having blue eyes and dark hair. By 1920, he had moved his family to Georgiana in Butler County, Alabama where he was truck farming. His daughter Lucile, who was about 10 in 1920, remembered the hard work in the fields in which she and her brothers and sisters helped their father. By this time, another daughter had been born into the family--Lessie Ree. In 1930, at the time of the census, Major James Raynor and his family were living on Hurtel Street in the city of Mobile, Alabama. Eventually, Major James Raynor and his wife settled down in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. I've heard that he made mattresses and stuffed them with Spanish moss. He died there January 11, 1959 and is buried at the Odd Fellows Cemetery which is located at the intersection of the Irvington-Bayou La Batre Road (County Road 16) and Alabama Highway 188.

If you are a descendant of Major James Raynor, I would love to hear from you! He was my great-grandfather.
