Patrick:
Here's yet another John Ray:
David Ray (s. John Ray and Judith Marshall), b. Nantucket 6-26-1788; m. Eliza "Betsey" manter in Nantucket on 10-17-1811.They produced the following issue:
Judith Ray, b. 10-26-1812, m. Joseph C. Sheffield;John Ray, mariner, b. 11-15-1814, m. 5-21-1848, Phebe C. Gorham -- they list one daugher, Mary E. Ray, b. 12-17 1849;Mary Ray, b. 4-8-1819, m. James Archer in Nantucket 1-25-1850
After Betsey's death, David remarried, to Eunice Bunker, and they had no children.
Could the John Ray, mariner who married Phebe Gorham be the one?The fact that he's a mariner (who in Nantucket wasn't a mariner back then???) would account for him ending up in Blue Hill.Do you see any sign of his daughter, Mary as a sister to your Matthew? The Nantucket vital records don't list a death record for this John nor for Phebe. It indicates that they removed from the island and lived elsewhere.
My ancestor, Lydia B. Ray (Obadiah - Seth - William - Samuel) ended up in Vassalboro, ME, married to John Dearborn Jaquith.
Any help, here?
