William Ray is possibly my ancestor, What does the inventory list include and does it provide any other names? You have a lot of posts regarding the Rays so we may have some connection. My grandfater was Joseph Cooper Ray, born 1874 at Cedartown GA. His mother was Mary Mariah Smith. Mary's parents were Elizabeth McDaniel and Wade Fletcher Smith. Elizabeth descends from the Col Austin family and also related to the Langston family, she being a descendant of the younger sister of Dicey Langston Springfield, the Rev War heroine.
Mary Smith Ray died at age 34. Her husband was Rev William Hardy Ray. They lived around Greenville SC area. She had connections to GA, but I haven't found any on the Ray side except contact with Mary's family. Mary's mother died young as well and Wade Fletcher Smith married Catherine Kay. Rev Ray married Clemmie Sammons from Traveler's Rest after Mary died. They later moved to IT (later OK)We have quite a bit of Ray and Smith lineage if you are interested. We know that one of the men named Thomas Ray who traveled from England to the port at Baltimore is our ancestor. We know he stayed around Anne Arundel MD for awhile and then about the time the Carolinas split into the two states, he purchased land very near Chick Springs and what is now Greenville SC. We know there is a descendant named Haney Ray that lived in MS but we are looking for an older man that was also named Haney/Haynie. We have found records for Hananiah which we believe to be the same man BUT we are searching for more information about him which will link us to the correct Thomas. Rev William Hardy Ray wrote down the lineage before his death in 1925but we think he skipped a generation or at least a name on the list. I will need to look at my notes for further back names. William Hardy's father was named James Ray and his mother was Jane Hardy Ray. We are willing to share information and hope that you can provide some clues for us as well. The Rays moved into different areas. We know we are related but not direct lineage to John Sheckles Ray who moved to KY and then to TX. We believe our "bunch" went more directly from SC to north central TX. Happy reseaching to you.
