States: "Some guess work" was involved in naming a "William WRAY as a s/o William WRAY m Mary WHITSON of the Surry Co., VA" records.


The Surry Co., VA Records Contain The Following:

#1 - Surry County, Virginia, Wills, Estate Accounts and Inventories, 1730-1800, by Lyndon H. HART, III, published in 1983,

pg 138 - William RAY Will

Dated: 1st June 1731 - "Eldest son William RAY".

............."My Brother-in-law: PITTMAN"................


#2 - Cavaliers and Pioneers - Volume II by Nell Marion NUGENT, published 1977 by The Virginia State Library, Richmond, pg 351

..... Whereas John WHITSON, of Surry Co., purchased of Richard WELBECK 200 acs, in sd. county, near head of Greye's Cr., 14 Sept. 1672, to be held by him & his heirs forever; & whereas sd. WHITSON was seized in his demesne as of fee of & in sd. 200 acs., & being so seized committed rebellion & high treason & was for the same legally convicted & executed & also legally attainted, as appears by Act of Assembly of 1680 whereby all his estate both real & personal became forfeited to his Majesty; & whereas

.................."WM WRAY & MARY, his wife, the only dau of sd. WHITSON".................

hath made composition for sd. land & payed what by the Charter, Law & Custome of Virga. is required in such cases; know yee, therefore, &cc., give & grant unto sd. Wm WRAY & "Martha", his wife, all the aforesd. 200 acs., &c., 23 Oct. 1690, p 88


FOR THE RECORD:

The Surry Co., VA Records show:

A William RAY on the 1st of June 1731, with an "Eldest Son: William RAY & a Brother-in-Law PITTMAN".

And a:

William WRAY m Mary/Martha WHITSON, on the 23rd of October 1690 without a Brother-in-law as Mary/Martha WHITSON was an only daughter.

ITEM: William WRAY m {Mary/Martha WHITSON} Will is found on pg 613 of Mr. HART's Publication

Dated: 9th December 1735

Wife: Martha - Use of Plantation at Copahonk {Greye's Creek} then to:

Son: Lenard RAY
