I hope all you seasoned Rawls researchers will forgive my lack of knowledge but I am brand new to this surname, having learned only a few days ago that one of my direct ancestors may have been a Rawls. I was traveling (researching) backwards from Georgia into Edgecombe and Halifax counties in North Carolina with the Dorman family when a very kind soul saw one of my messages and sent me two large envelopes full of photocopies of wills, deeds, etc. which led back first to the Perry family and then (possibly) to the Rawls family. His generosity still has me reeling. It will probably take me months to fully absorb all this information. It appears that Mitchell Dorman (son of Michael Dorman), who died in Edgecombe County in 1784, was first married to Olive Perry, daughter of James and Patience (Rawls?) Perry. I have photocopies of both James and Patience's wills (made 1770 and 1771 respectively). James names all his children, including a son named Rawls and a daughter named Olive. Patience names only her daughter "olif" (some see it as alis) Dorman and her son John Perry. (James did not list a daughter named Alis.) Mitchell Dorman married second, shortly before his death, Mrs. Mary Harper, widow of David Harper. Mary Dorman, widow of Mitchell, died in 1801 and left property to her Harper sons. Olive Perry Dorman was the mother of my Allen Dorman (abt. 1768-1831) who died in Twiggs County, GA, leaving a very large family to survive him. Allen's brothers Cullen, Willie (Wilie) and Mitchell traveled with him across Georgia in the very early 1800s. None of them ever seemed to have put down roots for very long and they were seldom home when the census taker came. Either that or they hid in the barn or moved in with relatives of a different surname. Allen's brother, Cullen Dorman, married into another family name which connects with the Rawls, and that is the Fort family. Cullen married Rosannah Fort, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Fort. An Arthur Fort is shown living next door to my Allen Dorman in his last recorded census, 1830, Twiggs County, GA. There is a very aged male living in Arthur's household. I don't know who Arthur is but he is likely a relative of Rosannah Fort, Allen Dorman's sister-in-law. I'm trying to determine whether or not Patience was a Rawls and, if so, who her parents were. Any help gratefully appreciated. Judy Fowler Kilgore Newnan, GA Notify Administrator about this message?
