Hi Michelle,
I have done a lot research on the Rawlinson Falmily. My 4th Grt Grandfather was John Rawlinson of Richland Co. S.C. and S.E. GA. and my 5th Grt Grandfather was Benjamin Rawlinson of Richland Co. S.C. My Rawlinson Family migrated south from Virginia to North Carolina to South Carolina and then to Georgia.A website that I have found that has a lot of information on this Rawlinson family is Freeafricanamericans.com(The name is decieving because a lot of these families were mixed with Native Americans also.A lot of them was Tri-Racial). It begins with an Elizabeth Rawlinson in York County, Virginia, 1663 and her assumed daughter Elizabeth Born 1684. I believe that the Richland Co. S.C. Family is connected to this 2nd Elizabeth through her son George Rawlinson born 1705 and not Elizabeth born 1708 as mentioned in the Text. George is first mentioned in court documents in York County, Virginia. He is then found in various documents in Bertie Co. N.C.("John Gibson, Gideon Gibson as well as Smith and Rawlinson [Rollinson] were sued in Bertie County, NC., by Philip Lightfoot and Benjamin Harrison, executors of Francis Lightfoot in 1730/31.
30 April 1727 George Rawlinson gives his promissory note to Francis Lightfoot-Witness Richard Grinselle.
9 June 1731 Order to the Provost Marshall to summon George Rawlinson planter of ----Precinct to appear in General Court at Edenton the last Tuesday in Jul next to answer Phillip Lightfoot & Benjamin Harrison executors of Francis Lightfoot dec'd"). On Freeafricanamericans.com it says that Elizabeth born 1708 was probably William Rawlinson's, born around 1727, mother. But I believe that her brother George is William's Father because George was in N.C. by the 1730's and William shows up in various Tax record documents pertaining to "free persons of color" in the 1750's(William1 Rawlinson/Rollinson was a "mollatoe" taxable with his unnamed wife in William Person's Granville County, North Carolina Tax List in 1750 [CR 44.701.23]. I am almost definent that William is my 5th Grt Grandfather Benjamin's brother because they both migrate down to Richland Co. S.C. in the 1760's. In Richland Co S.C. in the mid to late 1700's and early 1800's there is a very large community of "free persons of color" or "Other Free". This community had many families that were Bi-racial and Tri-racial(White, Indian and African descent). The Rawlinson family was part of this "free person of color" community. I have done extensive research on these communities and their migration patterns.
From studying migration patterns of various families that were considered "Free Persons of Color" or "Other Free", I have come to believe that the Rawlinson Family are Descendants of the Saponi Nation(Various Eastern Siouan Tribes) from the Virginia and North Carolina Border. In various counties in North Carolina and South Carolina these families were almost always living in close relation to each other. They made up the so-called "Bi-Racial or Tri-racial Isolate Groups" in these areas. Some of the counties where these families lived were Granville, Person, Orange, Alamance, Warren, Northhampton, Halifax, Edgecombe, Bertie, Sampson and Robeson in North Carolina. The first eight counties are related to the Saponi Nation, Bertie is related to the Tuscarora, Nansemond and Saponi Tribe, Sampson is related to the Coharie Tribe and Robeson to the Lumbee Tribe. In South Carolina some of the counties were Marlboro, Dillon, Darlington(Pee Dee, Lumbee and Other Mixed Tribes), Richland, Sumter(Saponi and other Eastern Siouan Tribes) and Orangeburg(Santee). It is known that the Saponi had close relations to the Catawba Tribe in South Carolina and they often migrated back and forth between their North Carolina lands and the Catawba in South Carolina. As Stated above, in the Mid 1760's, William and Benjamin Rawlinson migrated from the Granville Co N.C. and settled in Richland County, South Carolina between the forks of the Congaree and Wateree Rivers two counties south of the Catawba. In 1810 there are 10 Rawlinson/Rollinson families listed as "Other Free" in Richland Co. Also, in this same area, there are several other families listed as "Other Free" which are surnames that are associated with the Saponi, Catawba, Lumbee and other Eastern Siouan Tribes which include: Jefferies, Harris, Evans, Griffin, Scott, Jacobs, and Chavis. All these families made up this large community of "Other Free Persons" or a "Racial Isolate Group" in Richland County, South Carolina. John Rawlinson, the progenitor for most of the Rawlinsons/Raulersons in South Georgia and North Florida, is a descendant of this "Racial Isolate Group" of Mixed Saponi and other Eastern Siouan Tribes as are many of his descendants. I hope this helps you out to possibly tie the connections together. Thank You.
