My GGrandfather, Oswald Ravenscroft was born in 1864 in Sandbach, Cheshire. His father, George was also born in Sandbach in 1802 and worked as a blacksmith in Wheelock a couple of miles away. George died in the Congleton Union Workhouse (Arclid)in 1885. George's parents were John and Elizabeth (Betty) Ravenscroft and they were married in St Mary's Church, Sandbach on 31st December 1798.
The trail runs out here as we have been unable to trace the birth of John. He died in July 1827 aged 57 but we cannot find any record of his birth around 1770 in the Sandbach parish registers - only a Thomas is listed around this date. There is a possibility he was born in another local village (Haslington?) but have not searched this. Can anyone help?
