Rattray/Macfarlane

I am Looking for my Grt Grt Grandfather David Rattray Macfarlane (or Macfarlane Rattray,he seemed to use both names). He was born in Arbroath Scotland Between 1830 and 1840, according to his death cert and his parents are listed as John and Helen. According to his son Johns Birth Cert he married a Margaret Gall in Glasgow Scotland in 1862. They moved to NSW Australia and had son John born in NSW Australia in 1866. (Davids surname was Macfarlane on Johns Birth cert). He then married Margaret Morgan in NSW Australia in 1868 (using the name Rattray) and they had 6 children,4 born in NSW Australia and 2 born in New Zealand where they moved, around 1878. The 6 children born to Margaret Morgan all had the surname Rattray.(The 2 children I know of, returned to using the Surname Macfarlane as adults). Have been unable to find any record of David marrying Margaret Gall in Scotland,or of Margaret Gall dying in Australia, I do wonder if Margaret Gall And Margaret Morgan could be one in the same. He was a Master Mariner.
I hope this isn't too confusing. Is a bit hard to explain with all the name changing etc.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
