RATLIFF. "You will undoubtedly be surprised to hear from this wandering Kentuckian . . . I have resigned the position I held for two years under the Bureau of Forestry and am now contracting in the lumber business." The letter described railroad and irrigation projects in the area noting that immigrants were plentiful and the land is dotted with settlers. He said his area was an excellent grain producing land and that more laborers were needed. Labor recruiters were active, offering $2.25 to $3 per day. Snow was heavy--four feet in the mountains, 26 inches on the plains, and it had been 35 degrees below zero. "I can stand the cold here better than in Kentucky. Last February a crowd of boys and girls went thirty-four miles to a dance in an open-top rig, and the next morning when we were ready to start home, it was 28 below zero."
