A biography/family history of Robert M. Rathbonem passenger conductor for the Great Northern Railraod, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 879.

Robert was born, 13 Nov 1874, Sparta, WI, the youngest child of Robert B. and Augusta D. (Martindale) Rathbone. Robert was born Jun 1825, Rhinebeck, NY, and died at Minneapolis, MN, in 1904. Augusta was born in 1837, Ithaca, NY, and died at Minot, ND, in 1918. They were married at Delavan, WI, in 1857 and had six children.

Robert M; Rathbone was educated in the public schools of Sparta, WI, and Brown County, SD, and the high school of Aberdeen, SD. In 1893, he left home and worked in a mercantile busines for a year, leaving it to go with the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad as a worker in the Minneapolis freight house. In 1897, he went to New Orleans, LA, to be a timekeeper for the McClellan Dry Dock Company. Because of a yellow fever epidemic, that same year Robert returned to Minneapolis and the same railroad. He was made a locomotive fireman, a position he held until May 1901, when he came west to Havre, MT. In Jun 1901, he was made brakeman for the Great Northern Railroad, serving as switchman conductor, train master, and passenger conductor.

On 30 Jul 1900, Robert married Miss Bessie M. Davis, born in Redwood County, MN, daughter of George I. and Ellen Davis, the father born in Michigan, and the mother born in Maine.
