In 1850 he was living in the home of Asher and Louise Brown working as a laborer. He was a farmer in later years. In his will, Joshua names his wife, "Rhoba A. Rathbun", his two grandson, George A. and William B. Gibson and his daughter, Rhoba A. Roode, wife of George Roode.
