Children of John Ratcliffe
I have a family letter dated in the late 1800s from my gggrandfather, Richard R. Ratcliffe of Kentucky, where he talks about an Old Uncle Bill and the work he had done on tracing the family history. Old Uncle Bill was from Indiana. Bill says we are ancestors of John Ratcliffe, who was appointed governor general of Virginia and given land around Bat Cave. He said John was recalled to England and left his 4 sons here. One named Joseph went to Indiana, one named William stayed at the Bat Cave area family home, and two were nameless. One of those is our ancestor and he went to Georgia and raised his family there.
Does anyone have a story such as this in their history, or know the genealogy of any of these people? The John talked about here is obviously not Captain John Ratcliffe. I have seen John Ratcliffe's name on the plaque at Jamestown when I was young and I don't get the impression it was Captain John Ratcliffe. Also, Wikapedia states that John Ratcliffe was a poplular name in that time and place.
