I got the 1729 figure too, the second time around. The zero caused me to double-check my spelling but it was correct. These glitches are not explainable.

The red cliff at the bend of the Irwell River did give the place its name. There was a manor house there before the year 1000. In 1403, royal permission was granted to make it into a castle. The difference being that a castle was fortified, not just a very large house.

As for the webbed feet, I've only heard that a few times but I always smile. Thanks for reminding me. I have no idea where this started and would like to hear from some webfooted Ratcliffes/Radcliffes/Ratliffs. The closest the family came to royalty was the daughter of Moll Davies and King Charles II who had many illegitimate children. The girl was Lady Mary Tudor who married a Radcliffe. The Earls of Derwentwater descend from that line. There are other royal Radcliffes but they are not very interesting as far as I could tell.

Now I'm going back to the site and check for Talboy and Tallboy. Having some DNA results from those families would be revealing as I suspect many of them descend from Ivo de Tailbois. Thanks for the smile.

Gary
