Sandra,
No I didn't know about the American Protective Society. But there have always been evil organizations like that. I have great faith in our country because those organizations eventually go by the way and today they would be prosecuted. Some of the bad feelings about Catholics and Irish were demonstrated to be overcome with the election of John Kennedy.
Where is Mt. Carmel cemetary? There seems to be a history of Ratchfords going from Ireland to England and then to the U.S.and other countries. I'm reading a book called "The Cousins Wars" about the connections between the Enlish civil war of 1640"s, the American revolution (ie. civil war) and the American civil war, and the role of religions in them. I'll bet a lot of this Ratchford stuff happened during the English civil war when people chose sides between the Loyalists (including a lot of Catholics) from western and northern England, and the parlimentarians (including Puritans) from eastern and southern England.
The Loyalists apear to have settled the southern states as early a 1640, and the Cromwellians, the New England states.
Oh well. It seems like a much more complicated story that I'll ever "finger out".
Jim
