James Racey, son of Luke & Elizabeth
The 1816 Hampshire County, VA, Personal Property Tax listsElizabeth Racey, Thomas Racey, William Racey, John Racey, and James Racey. As far as I know, this is the first reference to James Racey. His age older than 16 years! He must be the long sought son of Luke & Elizabeth Racey. He would appear to be the same James Racey who entered into an agreement to buy, run, and maintain "Merchant's Mill" in Capon Bridge, VA, on May 17, 1822, from Owners William C. Nixon, representing the estate of deceased James Caudy, and the deceased James Caudy's partners: Samuel Gard, & Eli Beall.
James Racey's partners in this venture were Isaac Cummins and Peter Lyons.
Nixon's wife is Mary Ann Caudy.James Caudy's wife is Margaret Hiett, Samuel Gard's wife is Sarah Caudy, Eli Beall's wife is Margaret Caudy whose parents are James & Elizabeth (Lyons) Caudy. Mary Ann & Margaret are daughters of James & Elizabeth Caudy.I believe, but no proof yet, that Isaac Cummins is related to Mary Ann Cummins who later became the second wife of Tobias Stickley after the death of Maria Ann Racey of Luke & Elizabeth.Maria Ann Racey's paternity remains controversial for some researchers.
The point not to be overlooked is that all persons referred to are related.
