Did Native American Indian's use the "Rapp" name?

I am a bit stumped. I have been trying to find out about my g-grandfather Claire Jacob Rapp and have not been able to trace his family to Germany. I heard someone saying when the native Amerians were forced to take american names that they just chose some and Rapp was among them.
Can anyone confirm this? I need some help please. Or if you have any information on my g-grandfather that would be great too.
Thank so much
