Actually, years ago I found it simple enought to locate your James T. Rape in the 1870 Census of Georgia as well as other years before 1880 by using the various indexes available in most genealogy libraries. I have also always been able to find most family census records in 1880 and after by using the soundex system. However, there are some problems with locating families in census records when using either/both Ancestry.Com and Genealogy.com on line. Quality of these organizations microfilm and the quality of their indexing leaves much to be desired. However, you can find James T. Rape by using the index system in Genealogy.com 1870 Census when he was listed as "Jas. T. Rape" in Catoosa County, GA. He was listed then as a farmer, in the Ringold P.O. area in Roads Dist. (1084). If you have trouble finding him in 1870 Gen.com you might try looking at page 240 A, Roll No. 140, Catoosa County, Georgia. Ancestry.com film is such poor quality that his name is indexed as Jas. Rodgers even though their copy was one which had an ink sploch hiding the last name. Why they decided to index it as Rodgers is anybody's guess. However, James T. Rape was still alive on 8 July 1870 and listed as 54 years of age. His wife Mary was 46, Children were listed as: Elizabeth, 29; Thos. A., 26; Wm. E. 22; Cicero M. 22; Berthy E. 14; Ethel F. 12; and Ada A. 9.

It is no easy task to find this listing in either ancestry.com or genealogy.com. John V. Reeb
