Hi Sue, Thanks so much for all the info on Catherine & James O'Hara's family!! There was a story my Dad heard that James O'Hara was also in the 3rd Artillery (Dunbar's unit) during the Civil War & that perhaps they became friends thus leading to James meeting Catherine. Any truth to this do you know? It certainly does seem possible. Apparently there were accounts that the two were close. When Dunbar passed away in Texas in 1897 his body was released to James who came from Angel Island in CA. Dunbar was buried at Oakwood Cemetary & Old Trinity Cemetary in Fort Worth. Dunbar was brevetted for gallantry at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg & Kearneysville. One story was that during the second day at Gettysburg Gen. Tyler of the Artillery reserve sent about 4 batteries from Dunbar's 1st Reg Brigade up to the rear of the corps to be near firing line if needed. Dunbar lead Lt John Turnball's battery( F& K, 3rd US Art) forward at a gallop. Turnball's battery had 6 napoleans. As Turnball's pieces were dropping trail & preparing for action, Dunbar rode to the front to make sure that there were no Union troops that might be hurt by Turnball's fire. As you can imagine, he made a conspicuous target, one that the Confederates could not ignore & a skirmisher put a bullet through his thigh. As soon as he was brought in, Turnball opened fire. The military certainly was an important part of this family. Dunbar, his brothers (Thomas & Frederick), brother-in-law & his descendents & of course his father, Truman. I imagine you must know about Truman's accomplishments. It seems that there were Ransoms all the way back to the Revolutionary War. Some of whom were part of the Green Mt. Boys! Dad mentioned an Uncle who was a medic in WW2, will have to check with him on his name, have forgotten. Thomas I imagine you & your husband must have heard all about esp his being called the "Phantom General". Frederick we know served with Thomas in the 11th Illinois Infantry & was a POW during the battle at Fort Donnelson (Battle of Tennessee in 1862). Would love to continue sharing info, we probably have a lot of the same things but hopefully can pass some new stories to one another. My family & I are leaving later this week for a vacation to Vermont. (My parents actually live about an hour from Woodstock where Truman was born & lived most of his life with Margaretta & their children!) It is so beautiful there. If I don't have a chance to chat again this week, will be in touch when we return. Take care, Liz Notify Administrator about this message?
