I am of the belief the so-called three brothers of Lancaster County and Cumberland County, PA were not truly brothers at all. The first two arrivals, an Adam and a Hugh, both were poorly educated and could not read or write. The so-called middle brother, John Rankin, did not work with them upon his arrival in the states in 1727. John was well-educated and worked with the government as a tax collector. While not possessing the same Y chromosome in my opinion, they were definitely acquaintances. I have searched and scowered through several records on the afore mentioned David Rankin 1745-1802. I cannot find a separate record of another David Rankin with the same life span listed. My history has this David moving to Augusta County, VA with others of his surname and family to the Staunton where he married a Margaret Kerr or Martha Culbertson. Margaret Kerr was the more likely candidate because the Kerr family were far more numerous in the area. Ancestry.com has her married to a James Rankin, but I believe that to be her son instead of her husband. A Ron Rankin of South Pittsburg, TN has stated he believes this David to be a completely different person than the one from Cumberland County, PA. I can find no evidence as to this assumption. Based on the history of the region, it is my belief this David moved South purchasing land in the southern part of the county with his wife Margaret Kerr. They were to have five kids before Margaret died at a relatively young age. After her death, I believe David sold his interest in the property and went back north to the Staunton area. While there, it is my belief he married Anne Campbell, daughter of William Campbell, one of the Colonels at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Here the family would remain for another four years until 1779, when they would move South to the Greene County area. Mr. Ron Rankin has stated the family didn't move for a bit because of illness amongst the children. It is my belief this illness was upper respiratory in nature. As an asthmatic, I have traced this genetic disorder in my family back at least four generations to David Wilson Rankin, grandson of the first David. James Rankin, sone of the afore mentioned David, died young in 1810 leaving a widow and seven children. I believe James also to be an asthmatic. His son, grandson, great-grandson, great-great granddaughter and great-great-great grandchildren have the same disorder. I believe this illness to be the one that this family has had. No one has tested the Y chromosomes of other descendants of the first Adam Rankin descendants besides the David Rankin of Greene County. I would like to see whether or not my hypothesis is provable or not. The same DNA Y sequence found in this family hasn't been compared to other descendants of the original Adam settling here in 1720. I would like other opinions on this matter. Feel free to e-mail me at wrennt@bellsouth.net. Blessings, Tom Wrenn Notify Administrator about this message?
