I only just found your post. If you're still looking for information concerning Lydia Ogden Mask, this info might be helpful. From the book, Loose Probate Papers of Lawrence County, Arkansas, the heirs of Samuel Raney (d. 1 Nov 1857) as listed by his widow, Margaret (Fortenberry) Raney, included the children of their deceased daughter Ursula Raney, who married Jacob Ogdon/Ogden. Children of this couple who Margaret identified as Sam's heirs were Polly, Lydia (wife of Pleasant Mask), and Robert Ogdon/Ogden, all of Lawrence County, AR; Jess/Jesse Ogdon/Ogden of California, and Richard King (I think of Lawrence County, AR), the only child of Ursuly Ogdon/Ogden, deceased, wife of David King. Various family genealogies show that Samuel Raney was born 15 Aug 1777 in NC. Death date as above; buried at Cooper's Creek, Lawrence County, AR. He married Margaret Fortenberry, daughter of James Leath Fortenberry and Margaret "Peggy" Jones, on 4 May 1794 in Virginia. Margaret Fortenberry was born 27 March 1779 in SC and died in Lawrence County, AR, in 1865. Her will was proved 18 Oct 1865; I think she's buried in the same cemetery as Sam. Margaret may have been his second wife. A family tree posted on Ancestry.com by Linda Duncan in 2005 showed that his first wife was Nancy Steadman. As Margaret was Samuel's widow, if Nancy Steadman was married to this Samuel Raney, she had to be a first wife, as Linda Duncan showed. All children known at present to be Sam's were born after 1794 and thus are Margaret's. John and Maxine Fortenberry's book, The Fortenberry Family in Arkansas, shows that Ursula, second child of Sam and Margaret, was born 26 May 1800 in VA and died in or before 1857 in Lawrence County, AR. They also show that she and Jacob A. Ogden (b. ~1799) had five children (all given above): Jesse, Mary (ie, Polly), Ursula, Robert, and Lydia H. Ogden. (They state that Ursula was called Nancy in her father's will. This is not reflected in the Loose Probate Papers, which doesn't repeat the entire will, and only shows her as Ursula.) Sam and Margaret Raney were one of three couples joined by marriage (and perhaps other, previous, "bonds," not yet known) who were the first settlers in the area around and along the Strawberry River in northeast Lawrence County; a historical marker names these three couples for their contribution to the settling of the territory. The other two couples were Jacob Fortenberry and Nancy Taylor and Mary Fortenberry and William Taylor. Jake and Mary were younger siblings of Margaret. William and Nancy were brother and sister as well. I'm a seventh-generation descendant of William Taylor and Mary Fortenberry. A Steadman family is connected with this Raney-Fortenberry-Taylor extended family in Lawrence County. Thus, if Sam was married first to a Nancy Steadman, there might be a previous (pre-Lawrence County) connection among these four (and possibly a few other) families that simply hasn't been "found" yet. Many researchers of the families who comprise the extended one in Lawrence County have had a difficult time identifying previous generations (before 1777). I suggest that you look for further information in Lawrence County, AR, records, several of which are online. Some Raneys, Fortenberrys, and Taylors went to Texas before and after the Civil War, so you might try there too if the line you're researching seems to disappear from AR after the Civil War. I hope this information is helpful to you. Will be interested in learning anything new you discover! Kimberly Notify Administrator about this message?
