Perhaps this will add to the confusion as I am a descendent of one of the "other" Ramsey families in Augusta County and have been trying to find when and from where they came to Augusta County. My earliest known ancestor is another William Ramsey (1727 - Augusta Co or Scotland) married to Jane (abt 1731). Their home was in Lexington at or near what is now W&L Univ. They were married in Rockbridge Co in 1751. Children, recognised in William's will were Samuel, William, (Dr)James,Frances, Jane, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Mary. We have good documentation from the date of the will until the present, but prior information is very unreliable. Some have suggested that William was the son of a James Ramsey (abt 1690-95) who had at least 2 sons, William and John (married Mary Black). Dr. James had land in the Big Calfpasture River valley (also known as Marble Valley) and descendents still live in the family homeplace(s).

I have seen references to many similar names, but have yet to find any information that is definitive. Can anyone help??
