22 Feb 1738-1739 Robert Ramsey proved his importation in order to be eligible to purchase land. Source: Orange Co. Order Book I, P. 425. Unfortunately, unlike some, his wife and children were not listed. One must live on the property three years and improve same before taking title. 25 March 1742, William Beverley Esq of Essex Co transferred title to 309 acres in Beverley Patent to Sarah Ramsey, witnessed by James Cathey, Charles Campbell and Robt Ramsey. Note this is almost three years to the day (new calendar) from when Robert Ramsey proved his importation. Married women could not legally hold title to land unless by inheritance, and then usually a life estate. The will or other conveyance must specifically exclude the woman's husband, if living, from any right, title or interest. 1747 Robert Ramsey took title to 340 A. adjacent and just south of Sarah Ramsey's 309 acres. I do not have this deed. Source: "The Tinkling Spring: Headwater of Freedom" by Wilson (Beverley Patent map). Adjacent neighbors per the map and the year they took title: John Montgomery 1754, Nathaniel Steele 1766, Robt Poague 1740, John Tate 1749, Nathaniel Steel 1748, Robert Steele 1749, Robt Alexander 1747, Patrick Hays 1741, William Robinson 1749. 26 March 1748, Sarah Ramsey's property was processioned. Present was Robert Ramsey. Source: "Augusta Parish Vestry Book", P. 17. I believe it is logical to conclude that Sarah Ramsey was the widow of Robert Ramsey, who died c1738-1742, and they had a son Robert Ramsey born bef 1721 (Probably under age 21 in 1738, but at least age 21 in 1742 when he witnessed Sarah Ramsey's deed). 15 August1753, Sarah Ramsey sold her 309 A. in Beverly Manor to John Fulton; corner of land owned by Robert Ramsey. Teste: Hugh Fulton, David Hay, Robert Ramsey, Jno. Kerr. I do not have anything on a William Ramsey, who may have been a son of Sarah Ramsey, according to one of your posts. As to whether there were one or two Robert Ramseys, one who purchased property in Beverley Manor in 1747 and one living in Calf Pasture 26 Feb 1749 when his daughter Sarah was baptised is moot. It could be the same person, and he leased out his property in Beverley Manor. I do know there was a Robert Ramsey who came to Lancaster Dist from Barbados, but to the best of my memory, this was several years after most of the Ramseys had removed from the area. Sorry, can't find my source. This Robert Ramsey appears to be unrelated, or at least not closely related, but only DNA will tell. Let's get past this much, then work on Beard/Hall/Moore/Steele.
