Ramsden mystery: Halifax, Yorkshire

My ancestor Annie Haigh was born in Halifax about 1855. Her mother Rachel Ramsden Haigh, daughter of William and Mary (Fawcett or Pollard) Haigh had lived in the USA for several years before coming back to Halifax at the time of her daughter's birth. Why was she there? To visit an ailing family member?

I don't have a birth record for Annie Haigh, but would like to know how to investigate her birth.
