A wise and learned Genealogist at the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, once advised the writer that: "In ancient days, the first son was always named after the father. The second son was named after the father's father. The third son was named after the mother's father. The fourth son was named the father's brother. Therefore, Dr. David and Isobella Wood named their 1st son-David; their 2nd son William, their 3rd son John (after St. John Ramsden, Baronet) and 4th son Edward, after Dr. David's brother.
