I can't believe your message has been posted for all these months without me noticing. It just shows how lazy I am about my family history.

I think I know who your William H Rampling was. Years ago I found a baptism record for 'William Henry' Rampling of 24th July 1870 in Preston. His mother was called Ellen but there is no mention of a father.

I am sure Ellen is the same person as Eleanor Macdonald Rampling born on 3rd December, 1846 - baptised 13th April, 1850 by the Revd. Richard Slate, minister at Grimshaw Street Independent Chapel, Preston. Eleanor's brother Robert was a landscape painter and he was my great grandfather.

I can trace the Rampling family back to 1750 in Brandon, Suffolk, but other ancestors of Eleanor much further back.
