Paul,
Interesting! My mother is Juli Ramos Ormsby, descendant of a Ramos of the Azores. My grandfather (her dad) is the son of a man that came to the US from there, first generation.
I have grown up listening to the Cinderella story of this great grandfather of mine, the "Strongman of Boston".He was the only son of a wealthy landowner, destined for greatness....but, of course, he fell in love with a beautiful red headed girl from the peasantry. His father forbid the match, claiming that it was beneath him and sent him away on a ship to learn a trade.Well, evey time he would come into port, he woudl see this lovely red-head and knew that he had to marry her.
His father swore that he would be disinherited if he did marry her, but love conquered and they were married and came to the states. My Grandfather, Joseph Ramos, was one of their children.
I have a locket with their picutres in it that was given me by my grandfather for my eighteenth birthday and have treasured it since.
I am aware that there was a daughter, and that she inherited the lands that would have gone to her brother, had he not left.
If this story is identical to this Maria you are looking for, I would be VERY interested in learning more.If not, I hope that I have entertained you with my family Cinderella story!
