I believe Lucy Coleman married James Rains in Cocke County, TN before 1822.They had 3 children before he died or they were divorce, after 1830. James is listed in the 1830 Sevier Co. Tn cesus with wife and 3 children whose ages fit the children mentioned below. With the 3rd child (John W. Rains) being born in Sevier CO. in 1829 (see1860 NC Census)James and Lucy would likely be living in Sevier in 1830. James is possibly the son of early Cocke Co Isaac Rains who is also listed in Sevier Co 1830 Census. He is not in Cocke Co. in 1830.
Rains Children:Nancy M. Rains b. abt1822, Cocke Co.TN; William Allen Rains b.abt 1824, Cocke Co. TN; John W Rains b. abt1829, Sevier Co.Tn.They can be found in the Shoal Creek township in the 1860 Cherokee Co., NC census with families. Lucy (Coleman Rains) and Eaden White are living between the sons. Several Coleman cousins live next door to John W. Lucy Coleman Rains married Eaden White between 1834 (After her father named her Lucy Rains in his will in Monroe Co, TN) and 1840.Nancy M. married William Butler Nelson of Hall Co. Ga about 1842. Lucy & Eaden can be found in 1840 Polk Co. Tn census with three children that match ages of Rains Children. They are listed as step-children to Head of household Eaden White. There are several Colemans living nearby in Polk Co. in 1840.
In 1850 Murry Co. GA census, Eaden and Lucy are living next door or with William (Allen) & Sarah Rains. Their son John was born there in 1850 as indicated in 1860 NC Census. John W.& Cynthia (Hickman) are living in Monroe Co. Tn in 1850 census near her parents James & Anne Hickman.
All are back in Cherokee NC by 1860 and all but John W and family remain there for several more census counts.1870 & 1880.John W moved to Benton Co. AR. I am descended from John W.Rains.
I have worked on this for about 4 years starting with the names of John and Syntha Rains. Above are the conclusions I have come to based on the census information and other conections.I just recently found Lucy's maiden name, Coleman, from your posting and knowing that helped verifyall I had found in my research. Hope this helps connect some of the Coleman and Rains seekers. The Joel living in Cocke Co in 1830 has too many children for it to have been Lucy Coleman as his wife.I think the above findings is pretty strong evidence that she was married to James Rains.
