Hello Robin
I don't have any Mary Elizabeth RAIN(N)ER and husband John BENNETT in my family 'tree' to date.

I do know exactly when my Rainer ancestor came to Australia from San Francisco - John Cragin RAINER arrived in Sydney on 19 September 1852, not with family but members of his minstrel troupe 'Rainer's Original Ethiopian Serenaders' (sometimes referred to simply as 'Rainer's Serenaders). The troupe toured the British colonies in Australia for several years in the 1850s; J.C. Rainer settled about 1858 in the central Victorian goldfield town of Castlemaine (as the licensee of the Castlemaine Theatre and Hotel Royal), while most of his troupe returned home to the USA.

After his marriage in 1859 in the neighbouring town of Kyneton to Sarah MOUBRAY, he MAY have paid a visit home to the USA to 'show off' his bride to his family. Apart from his parents George RAINER and Harriet RAINER (nee DE BOWEN) I do not know the names of any of his family. The wedding certificate of 1859 shows that J.C. RAINER was born in New York (about 1820) and that his father was a 'merchant' in New York. Whether the parents (and any other family) remained all their lives in New York I do not know, nor do I know whether any of his family were tempted to emigrate to Australia - some might have.

I do know that some apparently unrelated people of the RAINER name emigrated to Australia from Britain; also people of the RAYNER and RAYNOR families from various places.

So, I can't help you at the moment from information that I have. Have you checked the Queensland births, deaths and marriages 'Pioneer Indexes' on microfiche in the genealogy section of the South Australian State Library or in the local genealogical society library? What date have you for this Bennett-Rainer marriage?

Please let me know how you get on.

Best regards
Tony Rainer
