Joseph's father?
My lineage is: Joseph/Elisha/Hiram/Henry/George/William Royce.Basically, I am confused on the issue of Joseph's father. As I understand it, one school of thought argues that it is Mattheus/Matthius Reinboldt (b. 1676 in Durkehim), landing in New York 1710, then to New Jersey. If this is true, when did he and his family go to North Carolina, if indeed that is where our Joseph was born in 1725 or 1730?But as I also understand it, another school of thought suggests the "Rainbolt is from the French, Raimbault (or derivations)" idea and the ancestors are Acadians, which implies a migration from Nova Scotia or close provinces southward, into the mid-South, Deep South, and Louisana. There seems to be conflict in these two versions, not only in the different names and European heritages, but also if there is also the suggestion that "Joseph" would have appeared in the South "by 1755" (the evidence of Joseph being born in NC earlier seems more definitive).I am really eager to get some a firmer grasp on Joseph's parents (and, of course, my own direct descendants).(Sometimes I feel French, sometimes Dutch, sometimes German . . . always Texan, of course.)
My own questions: is one of these theories more "proven" (or persuasive) than the other?Has it been settled among the Joseph descendants that one or the other is the true story? In either case, is there a good idea about when "Rainbolt" evolved out of either Reinboldt or Raimbault and derivations?
I'd appreciate any arguments for or against either theory. Thanks!Bill R.
