Raglands of Gilmer, TX & TN
I am the great-grandson of Effie Rilda Ragland (Crain) (b. 1860 Gilmer, TX; d.1950 in California). She was the daughter of Dr. William Hardin Ragland (b. 1813 in Sullivan Bend, TN; d. 1891 in Gilmer, TX) and of Dr. Ragland's second wife Sarah "Sallie" Maggard (b.1827 in TN; d.1890 in Gilmer). These are areas of interest:
1.) We nothing about Sallie Maggard's ancestry, who Dr. Ragland married within a year of his first wife's death (Martha Biggers Hughes). I do know that he left his 3 children from his first marriage with the Hughes family when he moved to Texas with Sallie. Any additional information would be helpful here.
2.) In Gilmer, Dr. Ragland and Sallie had 3 children that I can confirm from census data. They were:
- Thomas J. (22 Dec. 1853 - 22 Jan. 1891): Nothing more known
- Lucetta (b. approx 1855): Nothing known
- Effie (d. 1860): My great-grandmother(Effie Ragland Crain), who I knew as a child in Pasadena, CA where she moved in the early 1920's with her immediate Crain family.
Any information on Thomas J. and Lucetta would be appreciated. Grandmother spoke of siblings, but none of her 6 living descendants who knew her can rember much.
3.) In the Gilmer, TX cemetary, Dr. Thomas Scott Ragland's parents are given as G. A. and Mary Ragland. Ancestry.com's tree for Thomas Scott indicates that G.A. was a son of Dr. William Hardin Ragland and Sallie Maggard. This would make G.A. Ragland a brother to Effie Ragland, but this cannot be confirmed from census data. Again, illumination would be helpful.
