1866, operating there until 1874. He took all the "official" photographs of
the Hannibal Bridge, having a $2,000 contract with the builder. He had the
first 18x22 inch camera here, sent from St. Louis by steamboat, to make
pictures of the celebration of the bridge's opening July 4, 1869. He had to
send to St. Louis to obtain glass to make his wet plates.MRS. RAGAN SEWED

that Kansas City ever saw. It was shipped here in pieces to be used in the
Hannibal bridge fete. Before opening in Kansas City, Mr. Ragan, then at
Macomb, Illinois, took what was said to be the first photograph of Abraham
Lincoln, a beardless young man. That was in 1858 when Lincoln was campaigning
Illinois in the Lincoln-Douglas debates.Mr. Ragan sold his shop interests in
1874 to his partner, Julius Plotz, and went to Topeka. He remained there a
short time, going to Atchison. He conducted a gallery there until May, 1881,
returning here to open at the northwest corner of Independence avenue and
Cherry street. He erected his own temporary building there.LAST SHOP AT 1421
GRAND.Mr.
Ragan's last shop was at 1421 Grand avenue, in partnership with his son, Frank
