Dennis- Far from being Americanized, your ancestors knew how to write and spell and probably insisted, as my grandfather did, that his name be spelled "Raftery" and not the far commoner, and somehow easier to spell and say "Rafferty." Close to the Bronx myself, I'm sure you were usually called something like "Raff-u-dy." That's the way my Bronx pals pronounced it in high school....
