Michael Rafter, novelist
I'm trying to find out the parentage of Captain Michael Rafter, Irish novelist, born about 1796. Books include The Rifleman and The Guards. His wife's name may have been Catharine. While in the army his children were born in various places like Corfu, Malta, and Jersey. Some of his children were: Henry (became an artist), Lucy (became a famous opera singer), Francis and William. One of Henry's children, Adolph, later moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. His aunt Lucy died at his residence in 1902, according to the Brooklyn Eagle. Another of Henry's children, Lucius, married the widow of Paul Schnitzler, an artist. And Henry's youngest son Claude Howard Rafter ended up marrying Mrs. Schnitzler's daughter Jeanette.
Very interesting family. But I want to trace them further back, especially would like to find out who Captain Rafter's parents were, to possibly link them with my own Rafter ancestor.
