Hi Shelly,

My wife is a descendant of Ann (Raffield) Jones, wife of William Britton Jones of Dodge Co, GA. She was born c1816 in Sumter District, SC, a daughter of William Raffield and Elizabeth Shorter who removed to Houston Co, GA c1829.

I and other Raffield family researchers have been working on the descendants of William & Elizabeth Raffield for a number of years. Several of the their children ended up in Pulaski (now Dodge) Co, GA.

I have two Mary Raffields who "disappeared", and one of them may be your gggrandmother, but neither of them was born in 1858.

One was a Mary Raffield (born c1846), who was the only child of William & Elizabeth Raffield's son Robert who died c1847. She was living with her mother Catherine in the household of her mother's second husband Allen King in 1850 in Houston Co, GA, but in the 1860 census, Mary Raffield (age 14) was enumerated in the household of her uncle and aunt William & Ann (Raffield) Jones in Pulaski Co, GA. In the 1880 census of Pulaski Co, GA, Mary Rarefield (Raffield) aged 33 was still single and living with her uncle John Pearce (brother of her mother). That is the last known reference to her.

Th other Mary Raffield whose subsequent whereabouts is unknown was born c1860/1861. She appears more likely to have been your ancestor. She was the youngest daughter of David S. Raffield and his wife Unity Williams of Pulaski/Dodge Co, GA and a granddaughter of William & Elizabeth (Shorter) Raffield. She is listed as aged 9 in the 1870 Pulaski Co, GA census, the last census taken before Dodge County was formed from primarily Pulaski County in 1871.

John Sheffield is listed as marrying Mary E. Raiford in Dodge Co, GA on 15 Dec 1881 by E. F. Lee, a Justice of the Peace. This is no doubt a corruption of the name Raffield. Interestingly, John & Mary Sheffield named one of their elder sons David, which may be an clear indicator that Mary's father was David S. Raffield

I hope this has been of some help. I would appreciate if you could share what info you have on John & Mary (Raffield) Sheffield's descendants.
