Rafferty Traveller families

I'm researching the family history of some friends of mine named Rafferty who are Romany Travellers here in England. Thier grandfather James Rafferty was a Tinsmith who may have been born in Ireland but I Ihave located him aged 24 in the 1901 census for Llannon, Carmarthen in Wales. He gave his place of birth as Merthyr, Wales, but I have not been able to locate him in the 1881 census to confirm this. His wife Rose gave her birthplace as Blackpool, Lancashire. also found living in a tent next to James Rafferty's family in 1901 was 55 year old Patrick Rafferty and his family. Patrick gave his birthplace as Flint, Wrexham in Wales but yet again, I cannot locate him in 1881.
