Hi Louise,

I am not sure how much help I can be, but I am happy to share with you what little I know about my Radecker's. When you referred to your great-grandfather fighting in "the War", which war were you meaning?

My Radecker people hail from Bad Duerkheim in the Rhineland Pfalz region of Germany (southern part of the country). I do have some records dating back to the late 1700's for the family (family names include Hoffman and Hoer). The family came to the US in about 1833. I think they came through the port of New Orleans, Louisiana and made their way to Watertown, Ohio. It seems that the travelers were the father and his children - perhaps the wife died during the travel or in Germany.

My direct ancestor on the Radecker line is Wilhelmina, my gggg-grandmother, who was born in Germany in 1824, if I recall correctly. Her brother William fought for the Union side in our Civil War of 1860-1865. There was another brother, Philip, and a sister (Anna Margaretha?) who came over with their father.

I have not been able to get much more information on the family when they were in Ohio. Records were not kept well back then. Wilhelmina (or Phebe, as she was called) married Johan Lorenz Schweikert (a wagon maker and woodworker) in Watertown, Ohio in 1848. They had several children and I am still trying to sort them out. Her eldest (I think) son Peter apprenticed with his father and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio as a young man. At the time, Cincinnati was a growing city with a large German population. Peter married there and had 5 children, only the middle child lived a normal life span. The younges two children died very young of disease and the eldest son was killed in a fire at the store the family owned. My ggg-grandmother, the eldest daughter, was injured in a streetcar accident and died of complications a few years later.

As you noted, the Radecker name is very uncommon and perhaps we have a connection! If I can be of any help in your research, please let me know.

Sincerely,
Chaille
