M'Lord,

I am an eleven year old student at St. Lucy's Priory in Glendora, California.

My question to you was quite simple. What is the difference between a baron and an earl? Your response was most unsatisfactory. Was a baron able to supply more men in wartime than an earl? It goes without saying that barons and earls were of superior intelligence and breeding and so are their descendants. Could a man be both an earl and a baron at the same time? While I doubt this, there are records of men who held both titles tho' perhaps at different times.

I suspect the difference is somewhat like Earl Spencer being a higher rank than the Earl OF Spencer. It can't be explained to persons of my inferior intellect.

If you can think of anything else that might help me understand, kindly advise.

Your humble corespondent,

Gary Radcliffe
