Merced Express, December 26, 1891
HON. GEORGE M. RADCLIFFE, of the editorial staff of the Merced Sun, died at the residence of his son, C. D. Radcliffe, on Twenty-first street, in Merced, at an early hour on Sunday morning last, after a brief illness, from the effects of la grippe. The announcement of his death was a surprise and a shock to his numerous friends in this city whom he had made during his brief residence here. The deceased was a native of Ohio, 63 years of age, he spent most of his useful life in Illinois, where he raised quite a large family and held a number of prominent offices of honor and trust with credit and honor to himself and his constituents. He represented his district two terms in the Illinois Legislature, and while there he was considered by his colleagues one of the most useful and able members of that body. Most of his life, however was devoted to journalism in his adopted State, in which calling he was recognized as an able and fluent writer. Four years ago he came to California and settled at Colusa, where he continued to follow the newspaper business with his son, C. D. Radcliffe, now one of the publishers and proprietors of the Merced Sun. About a year ago he removed to Merced to engage in editorial work on the Sun. He was a pleasant, affable and genial gentleman, and the many friends he made during his short residence here regret to hear of his death. The remains were taken to Colusa for interment, at the earnest solicitation of members of the Christian church of that place of which the deceased was an elder.
