DNA Project

I am very happy to announce that there is now a DNA Project that covers all of the variations of the surname of Raeburn, Rayburn and Rabon.

The project is very new and details about the project are on the web site at http://home.mchsi.com/~r165. The web site may be changing over the next few weeks as we try to convey what is most helpful to most people.

There is a lot of information on the web pages and links about DNA and what it can do (and can’t do) in Genealogy. The test that we are using is based on a study of the Y Component of DNA and therefore can only be done by studying the DNA of a Male with any of the variations of the Raeburn name. This would include everyone with a soundex code of R165 and many in R150 (Rebun, Rabon, Rabun, etc.)

If you are a male with any of these surnames, please join the project. If you are a female interested in these surnames, please talk to an uncle, brother, father or anyone else that you know with these surnames.

The intent of the project is to try to tie all of the current name variations together and see how many original immigrant Rayburns we can identify.

The obvious immigrant progenitors were Richard Rabone (Raibone) of Henrico County, VA, Joseph Reyburne of Augusta County, VA and John Raybourn of Surry and Prince George Counties, VA. There were many more and these three may have been related. We hope that DNA studies will help us sort these out.

Although the project is barely two weeks old, we have four participants at this time. Two tests have been analyzed and returned. They were actually done before the formation of the project. As more tests are completed, we can sort them into identifiable ancestral lines and possibly break through some of the brick walls.

If you have any specific questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.
