Jean, Thank you so much for writing. I am not really sure just what I do have on the Quinton family. I went to Mena, ARK last year to search for information on my WINTON, McKINNEY, and PATTON families and acidentally found my great grandmother's name MARTHA QUINTON on my grandfather, George T. Dink Winton's funeral home ledger sheet. I was on my way back to Colorado that afternoon (couln't stay over), so I ran to the courthouse to see if I could find anything at all that would be considered primary documentation on the QUINTON/WINTON family. I have two land deeds for James Quinton (these are typed, but were bound in the big ledgers at the courthouse). Book 10, pg. 354-355. #1...November 1, 1849 (certificate No. 5253) Quote..."Whereas James Quinton, of Polk County, Arkansas, has depositead in the General Land Office of the United States...etc...South East Quarter of the North East Fractional Quarter of Section Three in Township Two...etc..." #2...March 1, 1859 (certificate No. 7465) Quote..."Whereas, James Quinton, of Polk County, Arkansas, has deposited in the General Land Office of the United Stated...etc...South West Quarter of the North East Fractional Quarter of Section Three in Township Two....etc." I am not sure how to read all the little bits of land transactions taking place, but on the same page with the 1859 deed belonging to James there is a note signed by Nancy Quinton, Joel Quinton, George and Martha Winton, and Jackson and Mary Ann Lowther that says they..quote: "do bind ourselves, our heirs and assigns to warrant and defend the said Nathaniel Quinton, his heirs and assigns, the right, title, and claim to the within described tract or parcel of land." (28 Feb 1863) Looks like they are giving Nathaniel the land James got in 1859 as that record is on the same page. Nathaniel was alive in 1863 because I have a land deed of October 17, 1860 where someone named Selpha sold land to James Quinton. (This whole page is hand written...Deed Book G page 401) Looks like son, Thomas, witnessed this deed. At the bottom of the same page written Feb. 28, 1863, Nancy Quinton, Nathaniel Quinton, Joel Quinton, George and Martha Winton... Quote.. "Do bind ourselves our heirs and or assigns to warrant and defend to the said Jackson Lowther his heirs and assigns the right title and claim to the within described tract or parcel of land...etc. Evidentally, they were giving Lowthers the land James got from Selpha. On November 10, 1873, it says...."We George M. Winton and Martha Jane Winton, his wife, and Joel S. Quinton and Palmyra V. Quinton, his wife, heirs and legatees of Nathaniel Quinton, deceased, late of Polk County and State of Arkansas, for and in consideration of the sum of Three Hundred Dollars, to us in hand paid, the receipt of which is hereby acknowled, do bargain, sell, and quit claim and convey unto Jackson Lowther and Mary Ann Lowther, his wife, of the County of Polk and State of Arkansas, also heirs and legatee of the estate of Nathaniel Quinton...etc...the South East Quarter of the North East Fractional Quarter of Section Three....The South West Quarter of the North East Fractional Quarter of Section Three...etc." SAME two land deeds that James Quinton bought. It goes on to say...."the parties grantor to the within and foregoing deed of conveyance, do covenant with the said Jackson Lowther that we are the true and lawful owners by right as heirs and legatees of the estate of the said Nathaniel Quinton, deceased....etc." No mention in anything I have about a wife or children for Nathaniel. Jean, I am going back to Mena sometime within the next three weeks. This time I am going to search only for QUINTON documentation. I just ran out of time to search so I just grabbed what I could last time to verify Martha Jane Quinton as the wife of George M. Winton. There may not be much as the courthouse has burned a time or two. That is why we never knew who married George M. Winton. Someone told Peggy Wilson she was a Crittenden and everyone has been trying to verify that info. Just luck brought me to the QUINTONs. I'll let you know if I find anything else. I would appreciate any ideas you might have on my earlier Quinton line. I believe James' parents are Samuel (1762) and Jane. After that, I don't know. Again, THANKS, for writing. I hope you can make out the deed info. If you want copies, send me your address and I'll "snail mail" them to you. Doyleen Notify Administrator about this message?
