Emily Quinn was the daughter of Loftin and Polly Gould Quinn of Shelby Co., AL. The following shows that she married Charles Merrell:
Familysearch.com:
CHARLES MERRELL
Spouse: EMILEY QUIN
Marriage: 20 Feb 1840
Shelby, Alabama
Charles Merrell and Emily Quinn had a daughter named Mary Elizabeth Merrell on 8 Nov 1843 in Shelby County. Charles and Emily split up for some reason, and Emily and her daughter appear back with her parents on the 1850 census of Shelby County. The entry is very misleading, because both Emily and her daughter were listed as Quinns, and this has caused much confusion. Many people have mistaken Mary Elizabeth as a daughter of Loftin and Polly Quinn, but she was their granddaughter. On the 1860 census, Emily is still listed as a Quinn and living with her parents, but her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Merrell was not with them. She had married in 1856 to William L. Gardner, as shown at Familysearch.com:
WILLIAM L. GARDNER
Spouse: MARY E. MERRILL
Marriage: 25 Sep 1856
Shelby, Alabama
On the 1870 and 1880 census of Shelby Co., AL, Emily is still at home with her now widowed father, Loftin Quinn, and she is finally listed correctly as Emily Merrell! (Is it Merrell or Merrill?)
Emily Quinn's father was the founder of Quinn Cemetery in Shelby Co., AL, which has just been recognized by the State of AL as an historical cemetery. A military marker is being placed there by "Friends of the Quinn Cemetery," for Loftin Quinn's War of 1812 service in Carteret Co., NC, his birthplace. My husband descends from Loftin and Polly Quinn through their son Michael and Michael's son Loftin Quinn (1843-1903), who served in the CSA from Shelby Co., and moved to AR following the war.
Charles Merrell married again in 1849 in Monroe Co., MS, to Mary Ann George. When Charles left a will in AR, he mentioned he had a daughter Mary Elizabeth who was married to William Gardner and living in Alabama.
